My Story

Where Every Design Begins

Henna has always been a part of my life. Growing up in a Pakistani household, mehndi was woven into every celebration: Eid, weddings, milads, and family gatherings. I watched my aunts and elders create intricate designs from memory, passed down through generations, and I fell in love with the art long before I ever held a cone.

What started as a personal passion became a calling. Over the past decade, I have had the privilege of being a part of hundreds of weddings, mehndi nights, and milestone moments across South Carolina and the Southeast. Each appointment is not just a service; it is a conversation, a collaboration, and a celebration.

I founded Pophenna with one purpose: to bring the depth and beauty of Pakistani mehndi tradition to every client, regardless of their background, culture, or occasion. Whether you are a Pakistani bride, or someone experiencing henna for the very first time, you deserve the same care, artistry, and attention.

Education

What is Henna?

A natural dye, a cultural tradition, and a living art form. Henna is one of the oldest forms of body art in the world, used for thousands of years across South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa.

Where Does Henna Come From?

Henna comes from the Lawsonia inermis plant, a flowering shrub grown in warm climates across South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. The leaves are dried and ground into a fine powder, then mixed with lemon juice, sugar, and essential oils to create the paste used for body art. The natural dye molecule, lawsone, stains the skin a rich reddish-brown color.

Mehndi and Cultural Tradition

In South Asian culture, henna, called mehndi, is an essential part of weddings, Eid, and life celebrations. The Mehndi ceremony (rasm-e-henna) is held before the wedding, where the bride and her loved ones are adorned with intricate designs symbolizing love, prosperity, and blessings. It is a moment of joy, music, and togetherness that holds deep emotional significance.

Is Henna Safe?

100% natural henna is safe for most people, including children and those with sensitive skin. At Pophenna, I only use pure, natural henna paste with no added chemicals or PPD. “Black henna” is not real henna; it contains dangerous chemical dyes that can cause burns and scarring. If you have ever had a reaction to henna, it was almost certainly a reaction to a chemical additive, not natural henna.

How Long Does It Last?

Natural henna stains the top layers of skin and fades naturally as skin exfoliates, typically lasting 1 to 3 weeks. The stain starts as a bright orange after removal, then deepens to a rich reddish-brown over 48 to 72 hours. Keeping it moisturized and avoiding harsh soaps and chlorine extends the life of your design significantly.

Henna Design Styles

Henna comes in many beautiful traditions. Pakistani and Indian bridal mehndi features dense, intricate coverage with fine detail and hidden symbols. Arabic mehndi uses bold florals and flowing vines with more negative space. Modern and minimalist styles take inspiration from both, using clean linework and geometric patterns. At Pophenna, I work in all styles and adapt to your vision.

Is Henna Only for South Asians?

Absolutely not. Henna is a universal art form celebrated across many cultures and embraced around the world. At Pophenna, I welcome clients of every background. Whether you are a Pakistani bride, someone who saw henna at a festival and fell in love, or a person simply looking for a beautiful, temporary body art experience. You belong here and your moment deserves to be celebrated.
